News & Updates
September 17th, 2005
I have bought some webspace and a domin, so when this is functional, there is a confirmed place for the main server. For this site's live demo, I'm thinking I might try to set up a system for the visitor to be able to edit a temporary profile and see how it would look, giving a demo of how the interface works and what comes out of it.

This project is now using CVS to help manage the code, and this page has been updated to reflect that. So now anyone can download the code and look at it, although it is still pretty uncomplete.

Sorry this hasn't been updated in so long. Life has stepped up and interrupted the flow of things. Now that things appear to be a bit more calm, I am going to try to get back into development. Since the web server with the old live demo went down, there is nothing do demonstrate what this is going to improve upon. Once this is at a functional state, the demo will be put up here. Because of Source-Forge's rules and regulations, the live demo can't have a huge user-base, so the sign up will probably cut out at around ten users. Hopefully after that, I will find another web server to be able to host the full-time service. Maybe once it's up and working well, someone would volunteer a server for hosting. But who knows what'll happen at this point? We will have to see.

The new site has been created for this project, and it will probably not change for a long time.
As for the development status of the project, so far the installation system is about 80% done and nothing more. Once the installation system is finished then the speed will pick up.
About openProfile
For about two years now I have working on a "sub-profile system that. up until now, was known as n0tgh3y profiles. One crude proof-of-concept (to prove that I could do it) version and one re-write later, it is going through another re-write to be open-sourced and unleashed on the world. The main purpose for this project is to provide an ad-free and efficient experience that you wouldn't normally get from the "leading" profile service-providers, Since a more mature form of the project has been running for a while, a sub-mission for the project has been to become so big and supported by people that it would snuff out the "leaders" and ad-free and efficiency would be a standard. With it becomming open-source, anyone would be able to run their own servers, this could happen.

Public Project Description:
openProfile is a "sub-profile" system that is comparable to SubProfile and BuddyProfile. The software is free for anyone who want's to run their own server and the service is free for anyone to use and it doesn't contain any ads. It uses PHP and MySQL.
Documentation
To run an openProfile server you will need.. When this project becomes more mature and is better documented, those documentations will go here.
Get the code
Currently, the only way to get your hands on the code is through CVS. If you are using Windows or MacOSX, your best bet is to use WinCVS or MacCVS. With most Linux distributions, the CVS client is almost always included in a standard installation (usually in a development tools category).

For your first time obtaining the code, open your terminal (or client), navigate to the folder you want the code to be placed, and type this command. NOTE: This will create a new folder called "openprofile" to download all of the files in to.
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sf.net:/cvsroot/open-profile checkout openprofile
If you have already done the inital download and want to update the code to what the CVS has, open your "openprofile" directory and run this command:
cvs update -dP
The install script is under development and might not always work so there is a folder labeled "devdb" that includes a sql file with the data for a new database and some dummy values.

You can also view the CVS through a web interface by clicking here.
Live Demo
The old live demo we had is now down. Once this project is at a mature and functional state, it will be back up for use.
